Dalhousie University Scholarships

Following scholarships are available for international students,

A.S. Mowat Prize

It was established in 1984 to recognize outstanding achievement by a student in their first year of a master’s program in any discipline at Dalhousie University. This scholarship is available for both Canadian and international students. The students must be enrolled in the first year of a master’s program at Dalhousie University as of the application deadline.

  • Value: $1,500

Abdul Majid Bader Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship is for International students. Applicants from Iran will be given first preference for the award, with international students being considered. Students with ranking (>3.7/4.3) in their last two years of academic study may apply. The scholarship is valued at $40,000 for one 12-month academic year of full-time study. The scholarship is renewable, subject to an annual progress review. The award can be held for a maximum of 24 months of full-time study. Fees are not waived and must be paid out of the award.

Chinese Scholarship Council – PhD scholarship

The Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) provides scholarships to students intending to pursue doctoral studies abroad. CSC provides up to four years of funding for up to 20 new PhD students each year, during which time each student’s Dalhousie supervisor will also provide funding to cover tuition & incidental fees.

Dr. P. Anthony Johnstone Memorial Bursary

This fund is used to assist a humanities or social science graduate student who has a record of interest and involvement in social justice and human rights. Competition dates are March 15 and October 31 each year. A bursary of at least $2,000 will be awarded at each competition. The students must be enrolled in a humanities or social sciences degree program and have an interest and involvement in social justice and human rights.

FGS Emergency Bursary

Faculty of Graduate Studies emergency bursary awards are meant to help students overcome temporary financial emergencies such as medical costs or other unforeseen expenses. Before being considered for an emergency bursary, you must first apply for a Canadian Student Loan and Provincial Student Loan.

John and Lena Graham Commonwealth Bursary

It is used to assist graduate students who find themselves in need of financial aid while in Nova Scotia. Recipients must be a resident of a Commonwealth country other than Canada and be in need of financial aid.

Killam International Research Award

This intent is to provide global research experiences for our exceptional Killam Scholars at institutions abroad. Two awards of up to $6,000 are available to current Killam Doctoral Scholarship holders to help offset the costs of undertaking research outside Canada for up to 3 months.

  • Value: $6,000

Killam Predoctoral Scholarship Level 1 (Master’s)

This intent is for the master’s students may hold a Level 1 Killam Scholarship for up to 24 months (but not past the end of the second year of your program). Awards are open to both Canadian and international students. As applicants must be eligible to receive scholarship support for at least two years, only master’s students who have yet to begin their program may apply.

  • Value: Up to $25,000 per year for up to two years, plus international tuition fees and relocation allowance, if applicable
  • Scholarship type: Entrance
  • Degree level: Thesis-based master’s
  • Available to: Canadian or international students

Killam Predoctoral Scholarship Level 2 (Doctoral)

PhD students may hold a Level 2 scholarship for up to 36 months, potentially extended to up to 48 months if you are successful in obtaining a Tri-agency doctoral scholarship during the Killam award period (but not past the end of your fourth year in program). Awards are open to both Canadian and international students. The students must have spent less than 24 months in your doctoral program by May 1st of the award year.

  • Value: Up to $30,000 per year for up to three years, plus relocation allowance if applicable and President’s Award if eligible.

Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements

Supplements of up to $6,000 are available to active Canada Graduate Scholarships (master’s or doctoral) or eligible Vanier CGS holders to help offset the costs of undertaking research studies outside Canada for a defined period. A total of 250 awards are available each year and are divided among the three agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Mitacs Globalink Research Award

The successful senior undergraduate students, graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows will receive a $6,000 research award to conduct a 12- to 24-week research project in the other country. Awards are offered in partnership with Mitacs’s Canadian academic partners (and, in some cases, with Mitacs’s international partners) and are subject to available funding.

Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral

Eligibility requires that applicants have not started their intended program of study prior to December 31 of the year of the competition, and the intended research must align with one or more research area priorities. The applicants must not be currently enrolled in a thesis-based doctoral program (i.e. they have yet to begin their program).

Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship – Master’s

This intent is for those students who must not be currently enrolled in a thesis-based master’s program (i.e. they have yet to begin their program). Their intended research aligns with one or more of the research priorities as identified by the province of Nova Scotia.

  • Value: $10,000 per year for up to two years
  • Scholarship type: Entrance
  • Degree level: Thesis-based master’s

Scotia Scholars Award from Research Nova Scotia

This award will support the growth, acquisition, and retention of highly skilled individuals who are advancing and translating knowledge in disease detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, strengthening health care delivery systems, caring for vulnerable populations, and promoting better opportunities for future health and wellbeing.

  • Deadline: Friday, April 22, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. AST
  • Value: $10,000 per year for up to two years (master’s) and $15,000 per year for up to four years (Doctoral)

The President’s Awards

At the time of admission in PhD, or within the first twelve months (three terms) of registration are in the PhD. Eligible students will hold a full doctoral scholarship from one of these specified funding programs:

  • NSERC (PGSD, CGSD, Vanier CGS)
  • SSHRC (Doctoral, CGSD, Vanier CGS)
  • CIHR (Doctoral, CGSD, Vanier CGS)
  • Killam (Doctoral)

  • Value: $2,500 per term for six terms ($15,000)

The Vitamin Scholarship – Doctoral

Thesis-based master’s and doctoral students with a first-class average who intend to pursue studies and research related to vitamins and vitamin-related products are eligible to be considered for this scholarship. The Award must be taken up at the earliest eligible term within the first academic year of the program.

The Vitamin Scholarship – Master’s

Thesis-based master’s and doctoral students with a first-class average who intend to pursue studies and research related to vitamins and vitamin-related products are eligible to be considered for this scholarship. The Award must be taken up at the earliest eligible term within the first academic year of the program.

• Value: $19,000 per year for one year
• Scholarship type: Entrance or in-program
• Degree level: Thesis-based master’s
• Available to: Canadian or international students

Travel grant

Conference travel grants can be awarded to full-time graduate students in a master’s or doctoral thesis program. The student must be a registered graduate student at Dalhousie University.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
