MEXT Scholarship 2026 for Masters and PhD – Application Open

Great news for scholarship seekers in Japan as Applicants are invited for the MEXT Scholarship 2025-2026 for Masters and PhD (Fully Funded) by the Embassy of Japan & from the Japanese Government. International Students from all around the world can apply this fully funded scholarship opportunity. The application process is started and the interested applicants are advised to the submit their application before deadline date. English Language Proficiency like IELTS/TOEFL is not mandatory for MEXT undergraduate and research scholarship. Japanese language is also not mandatory to apply.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan are organizing these scholarships for international students who wish to study Undergraduate and graduate(Master, PhD) courses at Japanese universities as Research Students (either regular students or non-regular students) under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program. There is no Application Fee to apply for the scholarship. Those who are enrolled in a master, a doctoral course, or a professional graduate course at a graduate school, or who are conducting research in a specialized field at an undergraduate department, graduate school, institute attached to a university, etc are eligible to apply.

For MEXT Research and Undergraduate scholarship, Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field. Moreover, the fields of study must be subjects in which applicants will be able to study and research in graduate courses at Japanese universities. Each grantee will be enrolled at a preparatory educational institution . The preparatory course is a one-year intensive course in the Japanese language and other subjects necessary for preparation for proceeding to university. Its curriculum mainly consists of education in the Japanese language, and includes other subjects such as Japanese affairs, mathematics, English, and social studies for those majoring in Social Science and Humanities, and physics, chemistry and biology for those majoring in Natural Sciences.

MEXT Scholarship Benefits:

The following all expenses that covered by MEXT Scholarship,

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants have to meet the following requirements to apply for the Mext Scholarship,

  • Only those countries are Eligible who have Diplomatic rations with Japan.
  • Japanese students are ineligible. However Japanese dual national whose current place of residence is outside Japan can apply for the scholarship.
  • For undergraduate age limit is 17 to 25 years old. For Masters and PhD programs the maximum age is 35 years old.
  • No need of IELTS/TOEFL score, Only English Proficiency Certificate required.
  • Master Course: Applicants who have completed 16 years of school education in countries other than Japan.
  • Doctoral Course: Applicants who have completed 18 years of school education in countries other than Japan.

The following documents (in given order) should be submitted before the deadline:

  1. Mark Sheet Form
  2. Application Form 
  3. Research Plan
  4. Abstract of previous research (if any)
  5. Attested copy of transcripts and degree of the last university attended​ (Attestation by University, Gazetted Officer or a Professor. HEC attestation is mandatory if selected).
  6. Original and Attested Copies of Degree Certificates
  7. Recommendation Letter from the president/dean or the academic advisor at the current or last university attended.
  8. Recommendation Letter from the employer (If applicable)
  9. Health Certificate

How to Apply for MEXT Scholarship:

MEXT Scholarship can only be through the Japan’s embassy of your country.

Go to the Embassy website of your own Country then Click on the Menu Icon and then look for ‘Culture & Education’ or ‘Education’.

In the First Screening applicants are required to do the following,

Download application form for MEXT scholarship 2026 and completely fill the form.

Attach all the required documents.

Japanese diplomatic missions will conduct first screening by examining the submitted applications, then written test will be conduct.

Selected candidates will be called for the written test in Japan Embassy.

Written examination of language proficiency will be conducted.

Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview.

Applicants who passed the first screening shall contact university of there choice for Provisional acceptance letter by the university.

MEXT carries out the Second Screening after reviewing the initial results from the First Screening, which is performed by the Japanese embassy or consulate in the applicant’s home country. Applicants who pass this stage and receive a university placement are then chosen as MEXT Scholarship recipients.
