University of Waterloo Scholarships

University offer many type of scholarships for students which are merit based and need based scholarships.

Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships

These scholarships does not require separate application and once student gets admission at the university they will automatically considered for these scholarships given they meet the eligibility and requirements,

1) President’s Scholarship of Distinction

Main Criteria:

  • Early May admission average of 95%+
  • Available to students admitted to full-time first-year degree studies at Waterloo 

Value:

$2,000 Entrance Scholarship, $1,500 International Experience Award and/or
$1,500 Research Award.

2) President’s Scholarship

Main Criteria:

  • Early May admission average of 90% to 94.9%
  • Available to students admitted to full-time first-year degree studies at Waterloo

Value:

$2,000 Entrance Scholarship

3) Merit Scholarship

Main Criteria:

  • Early May admission average of 85% to 89.9%
  • Available to students admitted to full-time first-year degree studies at Waterloo

Value:

$1,000 Entrance Scholarship

4) International Student Entrance Scholarships

Main Criteria:

  • Available to international students admitted to first year of a full-time undergraduate degree program.
  • Academic performance (minimum 90% admission average)

Value:

  • Several at $10,000 each

Undergraduate Scholarships (Application Required)

1) Sponsored by Donors or Other

Several at $1,000 – $20,000. The application deadlines for these scholarships is April 15.

2) Schulich Leader Scholarship

Up to 100 scholarships awarded annually across 20 partner universities in Canada. Half are valued at $100,000 for engineering scholarships and half are valued at $80,000 for science and math scholarships.

Other Undergraduate Scholarships

Apart scholarships listed above there are many scholarships available for domestic and international students. Each scholarships has its own specific requirements which must be fulfilled.

Graduate Scholarships

Many scholarships are available for graduates in different fields some scholarships are for all programs and some of course specific, Click Here for complete details

1) President’s Graduate Scholarship

Up to $15,000 will be awarded depending on the type of scholarship and where you are in your program when you start it. 

2) Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Awards

It is fully funded scholarship for Doctoral candidates.

The maximum amount per award is $35,000 for up to one year. This funding is non-renewable

3) Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Doctoral Scholarships

Another scholarship for doctoral candidates up to $35,000 a year for three years.

4) SSHRC CGS D and Doctoral Award

The Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarships and the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships programs are the two scholarships program offered under one application.

CGS-D scholarship is valued at $35,000 per year for up to 3 years while Doctoral Fellowship is valued at $20,000 annually for up to 4 years.

5) Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

$50,000 per year for up to three years are awarded to master and PhD students

Eligibility Criteria

Scholarships are offered to both local Canadian students and international students, criteria for each is different,

  • Candidate must be eligible to study in Canada
  • Minimum 75% is required in four years bachelor’s program to be eligible for admission in masters and PhD.
  • For entrance scholarship no separate application is required you will be considered for the scholarship if you get admission.
  • Candidates who are receive one scholarship cannot apply for another scholarship
  • Official language of instructions at University of Waterloo is English so you need English proficiency certificate like TOEFL, IELTS, C1 or C2, CAEL, PTE or EFAS and ELP result must not be older than 2 years. For students from ELP exempt country list english language proficiency is not required are not required.

Deadline:

Deadline to submit application for undergraduate is 1, February 2024 and for graduates 25 January 2024.

  • Some scholarships does not need separate applications while some need to be applied separately.
  • First select the degree and program you want to apply
  • Then check its requirements
  • Make sure you have all the documents ready before application
  • Try to apply as early as possible
