Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must be citizens of countries with which Japan has diplomatic ties.
  • Students from abroad who have just arrived in Japan to pursue graduate or doctoral studies are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be members of a group working on a SATREPS or e-ASIA-approved project.
  • Applicants who have applied to standard graduate programs at Hokkaido University and have received an academic record score of 2.50 (out of 3.00) or higher are eligible to apply for a University Recommendation SGU slot during the implementation term of the “Top Global University Project”
  • English test results or an academic English certificate
  • Candidates must possess outstanding academic standing and be highly motivated
  • For a master’s degree, the applicant needs to have a bachelor’s degree
  • Candidate Must Possess a Master’s Degree for a Doctoral Degree

  • Doctoral students pay 145,000 per month (*148,000 from November to March).

Because a cold region allowance is provided in the winter, the stipend for summer and winter is different.

How to Apply For MEXT Scholarship

With a scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, students can attend college (MEXT). There are three methods for requesting this scholarship:

  1. Embassy Recommendation

Obtain a reference from the local consulate or embassy of Japan. People who require an Embassy recommendation should check with the Japanese Embassy or Consular Office in their home countries because application deadlines vary by country. Scholarship applicants should get in touch with the Division of International Student Affairs at the graduate program they desire to attend as soon as possible to get a “Letter of Acceptance” after clearing the initial screening at a Japanese Embassy.   • University Recommendation

Through a Japanese university, students who will be studying abroad in Japan can be screened and suggested as candidates for a Japanese Government Scholarship. The candidate must have a cumulative GPA of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above from their most recent two years of study, and they must continue to meet those standards during the scholarship program. The applicant must also meet the requirements for linguistic proficiency.

  • Domestic Selection

Domestic selection scholarships, which start in April, are awarded to privately funded, full-time postgraduate foreign students, prospective postgraduate students, and full-time prospective fourth-year undergraduate university students (or prospective sixth-year students in the case of medical schools, etc.).

Eligible applicants should have an outstanding academic background and a keen enthusiasm for both Hokkaido University and Japanese culture.

Hokkaido University Special Grant Program for Self-Supported International Students

This Scholarship is for students who are applying to enter in PhD programs at the university. Beneficiaries of this program receive a waiver of their tuition fees in return for their service as Research Assistants. To qualify for this unique grant, candidates are required to demonstrate a strong academic track record and articulate how their research can have a global influence within their selected academic discipline.

The Special Grant Program is intended for international students who are applying for admission to a doctoral program within one of the following graduate schools:
